Half of my flist will already be aware of this from various sources, but since the other half will feel much the same way about it I hope you won't mind the repetition.

A long-time friend of mine and stripey_cat's is currently in a really stupid catch-22 situation, courtesy of Oxfordshire PCT. To whit:

In order to have the gender reassignment surgery she desperately needs, the body that provides the surgery (Charing Cross Hospital) says she must be functioning happily as a woman.
In order to have the gender reassignment surgery she desperately needs, the body that provides the funding for the surgery (Oxfordshire PCT) says she must need the surgery so much that she is severely depressed and at risk of suicide if she doesn't get it.

Please sign the petition asking the government to force clue on the PCT. Because this is ridiculous.

I don't suppose either side will listen if told that she is functioning happily as a woman: a woman who happens to be suicidally depressed at being in a man's body.

I have signed - completely agree with this! I have several trans friends and they all have horror stories to tell of the medical profession. The best one is that because gender dysphoria is still categorised as a mental illness you have to prove to a psychiatrist that you are mad before you can be eligible to transition. Given that two of these individuals in particular are amongst the strongest and sanest people I know, it's unbelievable!
